Ballad Of Our Changing World

In response to the Covid-19 Pandemic, photograpHER, a global online collective of women photographers, has organized a photographic exhibition. This catalog accompanies that online exhibit. For this show, photograpHER asked her members to submit work that they created in response to Covid-19 and its impact on their everyday lives or their communities. Twenty-seven women from around the world responded to the call. This is the result. The show presents the photographs as a collective visual story of our shared experience of isolation, fear, change, and creating connections.

Captivity - cover
Project

Captivity

Captivity refers to ways in which women unconsciously self-destruct to free themselves from all kinds of social and psychological pressures and worries. They often do this to relieve pressure on social relations and establish a more harmonious relationship with society. In many situations, taking these actions may be the only way to deal with everything from politics to religion to traditional gender-oriented power dynamics. However, these actions often have the opposite effect in destroying a person's relationships with the community and surroundings over time. Eventually, allowing themselves to be chained ends any connection with the world around them while creating its own mental conflict. For many women, this is their reality, though they are often completely unaware of this bondage. But because of the often-invisible nature of these constraints, many of them are willing to destroy their universe and surroundings.

From Light To Darkness: Art Against Femicide

In a world where the shadows of gender-based violence persist, "From Light to Darkness" emerges as an artistic testament to the urgency of confronting the haunting reality of femicide. Through a tapestry of visual, auditory, and tactile expressions, this collection seeks to unveil the profound darkness that engulfs the lives of countless women and girls worldwide. Each symbol of the scene, each note of the melody, and each sculpted form serve as both a lament and a demand for change. This art transcends the boundaries of culture, geography, and time, forging an unbreakable connection between the artist and the silenced voices of femicide victims.
With vivid red colors and monochromes, I unveil the stark contrast between the vibrancy of life and the despair of death. The canvas bears witness to the stories untold, the dreams unfulfilled, and the justice denied. Through my art, I cast a spotlight on the darkness that perpetuates femicide and challenges society's complicity in its continuation.
The infinity sculpture, wrought from raw material and dead flowers, takes form as a testament to the memorial. They embody the absence of women who have not survived. The red heels are an artistic symbol of femicide that is cherished in Elina Chauvet's art. These sculptures beckon us to touch, feel, to connect with the visceral reality of femicide. The haunting melodies that permeate the space draw us into the emotional landscape of femicide victims. The lyrics echo the unheard cries, the silent screams, and the pleas for a world free from gender-based violence. Music becomes the conduit for empathy, urging us to listen, understand, and act.
"From Light to Darkness" is more than an art exhibition; it is a call to action. It implores us to break the cycle of femicide by acknowledging its existence, advocating for change, and demanding justice. Through this art, we transcend the boundaries of our comfort and confront the uncomfortable truth that femicide continues to plague our world. Together, we stand as artists, advocates, and allies, proclaiming that the cries of those lost to femicide will no longer go unheard. This collection challenges us to be the change-makers, to ensure that every woman and girl can live a life free from fear, violence, and oppression.

Sovereign Flesh - The Architecture of Resistance

The series Sovereign Flesh: The Architecture of Resistance is about a woman reclaiming herself, quietly but firmly, against everything that has tried to keep her in the shadows.

It speaks about the female body in a world that has often tried to own it, shape it, and put it into limits that were never hers. In these images, light and darkness are always in tension. The deep black background carries that weight of pressure and silence placed on women by social systems and patriarchal structures. But even there, the body doesn’t disappear. It stays. It pushes back.

The light on the skin feels like something coming from within, not from outside, a kind of inner strength, a quiet glow that refuses to be shut off.

The folded body, the self-embrace, might look fragile at first. But for me, it’s not. It’s protection. It’s self-love.

When the outside world becomes too heavy, she turns inward and holds herself, literally. She becomes her own safe place. Every curve, every fold of arms and legs, becomes like part of a structure holding her together.

These images are about a kind of delicate strength. A tribute to women who have lived through pressure, inequality, and silence, but are still here. Still standing. They show the female body as something alive, untamed, and deeply its own strong not in spite of its softness, but because of it.
